![]() Dwight Ingram by Nicole Karas, Lauren Zabawa
Dwight Ingram
has been a professional ski instructor/trainer for
Off Piste Adventures for 14 years. Dwight had to go
through a three-step process in order to get
certified. The first Level one is the easiest,
level two is medium, and level three is the
hardest. Dwight got his PSIA (Professional Ski
Instructor of America) certification in 1993. He
now teaches two to three days a week at Loveland
Ski Resort in Colorado. The positive
outcome Dwight has to say about his job is that it
is a lot of fun and a lot more relaxed than most
jobs. He has a five-year-old son who is just
learning to ski. Dwight has had the opportunity to
watch his son grow up and learn how to ski,
training him at the same time. Although Dwight is
on the slopes all day, he is still responsible to
obey his boss when necessary. Dwight stated that
the negative part of his job is having to do ski
maneuvers when demanded. Dwight would much rather
just have fun and teach his students the fun way to
ski, with safety in mind, then be told the
techniques he should use when teaching. He also has
to do ski lessons whenever asked and part of the
time he would rather be skiing on his own than
teaching other people. Although Dwight's
job is a lot of fun, it comes with many
responsibilities and challenges. Dwight says that
most of the responsibilities come with the kids.
Their parents pay Dwight to teach their kids how to
ski, but keep them safe at the same time. One of
his biggest challenges would be teaching people how
to ski who are physically impaired. He had one
student who was deaf and Dwight had to use
different methods and demonstrations to help.
Dwight states "that
it is also a challenge when Loveland is so busy.
That is usually around Christmas, Spring Break, and
Memorial weekend." Dwight attracts
business via email. Loveland's Website is
www.skiloveland.com
and, Dwight
writes a column on the Loveland web everyday. He
then uses his email address, www.dwightingram.com,
to answer any questions people might
have. Overall, Dwight
loves his job. He meets new people everyday and
gets to watch them improve. He makes sure that
people have a good time. Dwight receives family
passes and discounts on skis and clothing. He says
that is another positive outcome of his job. His
motto has always been, "Just have fun."
