Kristie Young, operator of J. J.'s Gold and Gems
has been in Evergreen for eleven years. Her
exclusive business deals in sterling silver and
Indian jewelry as well as custom designed jewelry.
When asked to describe her business, she stated,
"We are a customer based business. We will do
whatever they want us to do as long as we can do
it." Owning
a small business in Evergreen is a very hard thing
to do because Denver is so close. Businesses in
Evergreen must stay competitive with what is
offered in Denver, or people will take their
business away from the local merchants. If jewelry
shops like J.J's Gold and Gems were not here,
people would complain about the lack of local
businesses. Ms. Young specifically said, "I wish
people would stay up here more and shop and use
their local businesses." The small businesses in
Evergreen offer many of the same things the larger
businesses down in Denver offer. J.J's Gold and
Gems is no exception to this; it offers many, if
not all the things, its competitors offer. The only
difference is J.J's Gold and Gems is much
closer. In
light of the recent events of September 11,
business has gone down substantially. In the days
after the attack, business completely died, but
when we talked to Ms. Young on February 8, 2002,
she said that business was slowly returning to
normal. For any of the businesses in Evergreen, it
is tough to draw customers away from Denver. J.
J.'s Gold and Gems has relied on word-of-mouth,
radio, and newspaper advertisements to draw new
customers to its business. J.
J.'s Gold and Gems relies heavily on walk in
business, although appointments can be made. They
advertise in the Canyon Courier and a local radio
station, KHOW, but the majority of people find out
about its business by word-of-mouth. J.
J.'s Gold and Gems has been in Evergreen for the
last nine years. When we asked Ms. Young why she
chose Evergreen as a location for her business, she
said, "This is where my family settled." Ms. Young
has an extensive background in jewelry; she has
taken several GIA (Gemological Institutes of
America) courses. Perhaps of greater value is the
hands-on experience she has had in assuring
customer satisfaction for each client. "I just love
working with people," said Ms. Young. This speaks
volumes regarding her desire to assure her clients
are happy. . To
